Differences between different manufacturers of adjustable beds

When beginning your search for an adjustable bed, you soon find that features offered on the different models are fairly similar. Manufacturers all use either a wired or wireless remote control to adjust the head and foot elevation of the bed, and some of the real basic types use a hand crank apparatus for adjustment as found on certain in-home hospital adjustable beds. Each manufacturer has their own version of a massage system, and a feature that keeps the head of the bed close against the wall when raising the bed known as a “Wall Holding” technology.

Manufacturers offer either an AC or DC motor for elevation purposes. The type of motor chosen would depend on the weight of the user, noise level concerns, and whether the need for a battery backup power system is needed. A battery backup system will allow the bed to be lowered to a flat position in the event of a power failure. Most manufacturers also offer a feature known as "Zero Gravity". This adjustment slightly elevates the head to an approximate 30 degree angle, and the foot of the bed just above the heart level, placing the hips and spine at an optimal pressure relieving angle. This position is great for reducing Edema in the lower extremities.

Engineering and structural differences in the different manufacturer’s models also have some similarities. The maximum angle of elevation for the head and the foot ends of the bed can range from 54 to 70 degrees at the head of the bed, and 32 to 60 degrees at the foot end. This can be a significant consideration depending on the extent of the medical concern and the amount of actual elevation needed for optimal relief. This consideration is of course, not just limited to a medical need. Many individuals not purchasing adjustable beds for medical reasons do so for recreational and comfort uses such as watching TV, and reading in bed. In this instance, having a greater angle of head and foot elevation for this type of use, becomes just as important as needing the maximum elevation for medical purposes. Structural wise, some manufacturers utilize a Uni-body frame, and others use spot welded construction. Generally, a Uni-body method of construction is more durable than a spot welded one. The gauge of the steel used, and the type of the steel should also be consideration. Generally manufacturers will use 12 to 14 gauges high Carbon steel for durability and most also utilize Powder Coating to greatly reduce chances of rusting or pithing of the metal.

The decking that the mattress rests on is also an important consideration. Some manufacturers will utilize MDF Particleboard, and others will use Industrial grade multi layered Plywood. Plywood is industry recognized as being more rigid and durable without the concerns of warping or chipping that its MDF Particle Board counterpart can conceivably be prone to.

Arguably the most important part of the bed is the motor. Without sufficient and consistently reliable power to raise and lower the head and foot ends, the bed is just another frame only mattress holder! Manufacturers use both AC and DC motors depending of the amount of user weight. AC motors have more torque and lifting ability, however are generally noisier. DC motors are virtually “whisper” quiet, and can lift about 75% of what an AC motor can do. DC motors also offer that battery backup convenience in the event of a power failure. They are also generally more power efficient than their AC counterpart.

The overall main consideration that will contribute to ones peace of mind when evaluating differences between adjustable bed manufacturers is the warranty coverage provided. Warranty coverage ranges from limited 90 day part coverage, all the way to limited lifetime parts coverage. Labor coverage for their warranties range from 90 days to 2 years. After this, the consumer is responsible for labor (installation) costs. It is important to read all the way through the warranty of a given manufacturer so as to fully understand all exceptions, inclusions, and exclusions.

There is no substitute for Due Diligence when selecting an appropriate adjustable bed for your specific needs. You spend a third of your life in bed, and without the ability to get high quality restorative sleep, you will not have the quality of life needed to function effectively each day!
