Different Types of Construction Methods and Materials Used on Adjustable Beds

Consumers considering an adjustable bed that have had experience with a hospital bed, sometimes are concerned with the durability and reliability they can provide in comparison to the commercial grade construction used in their hospital counterpart.

Today’s adjustable beds have been well designed and engineered to offer an even greater range of adjustment capabilities than a hospital bed. Being constructed of high gauge carbon steel, often with Powder Coating for protection from rusting, they are solidly built for long term durability. Heavy duty roller bearings and hinges to facilitate twin point articulation elevating head and foot ends of the bed, and with most manufacturers utilizing Uni -Body construction for greater structural integrity, consumers can rest assured that they will have a solid, durable bed for many years to come!

Equally important as the frames structural integrity is the support decking on which the mattress lies. Bed manufacturers use kiln dried, multi-ply industrial grade plywood decking not only for added strength to provide a solid weight bearing platform, but to also deter possible warping that could occur with a lesser grade Particle board type material.

Heavy duty 24 volt motors in both AC and DC configurations are utilized to meet varying weight capacity and noise regulating requirements. AC motors would be the motor of choice for those over 350#, since they generally have 25% more lifting capacity than their DC counterpart. DC motors are quieter, and have the advantage of having a battery backup system in the event of a power failure. Separate motors are used when the consumer chooses an available massage feature. These motors are more efficient than the main ones controlling elevation and decline of the head and foot of the bed, since load bearing requirements are not a factor.

Aesthetically, adjustable beds use special base covering fabrics with a variety of color tones that give the bed a look that closely resembles a standard mattress and box spring set. This is a definite plus over the institutional look of a hospital bed, and easier to integrate into existing room design themes.
