Latex Mattress Cost

For most people who purchase a latex mattress, cost is not the primary driver behind the decision.

The appeal of latex, lies in its ability to provide the comfort and support of a memory foam mattress in an all-natural, hypo-allergenic package. Latex mattresses - particularly all-natural and Talalay varieties - tend to be of superior quality which leads them to generally cost more than innerspring and most memory foam brands.

Latex mattresses are a fairly recently development that spun-off from the ever popular memory foam mattress market. Latex mattresses are engineered to provide the same body contouring support that made memory foam products famous. Latex cradles the body and evenly distributes weight to eliminate pressure points.

In addition to those qualities, latex mattresses are hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial. They are moisture resistant so mold does not develop and they are resistant to dust mites. These characteristics make latex mattresses a very popular choice for people who suffer from allergies or who have breathing-related difficulties like asthma.

Latex mattresses are available in synthetic and all-natural varieties. The latex in all-natural mattresses are derived from the milky sap of the rubber tree and made using an environmentally-friendly method. This variety is generally more expensive than petroleum-based synthetic latex mattresses or mattresses that blend the two types.

All latex mattresses are manufactured using one of two methods: Dunlop or Talalay. Of the two, Talalay is considered to be of superior quality because the manufacturing process involves an extra step where the latex foam is frozen. This makes Talalay mattress more firm than a Dunlop variety. Despite this, most manufacturers use the less-expensive Dunlop process for their products.

Latex mattresses are generally going to cost $800-$1,000, while a high quality mattress from a reputable manufacturer can be priced at up to $3,000. All-natural latex mattresses are generally more expensive than synthetics or blends. Talalay mattresses typically cost an additional $200-$400 over Dunlop brands.
