Level of Difficulty for Consumer Assembly of an Adjustable Bed vs White Glove Assistance

After having made your selection for an adjustable bed, you must now consider if you have the time, ability, and opportunity to assemble that new bed yourself, or if you are going to need someone to do the assembling for you due to time or physical restrictions. During the purchase process of your adjustable bed, your salesperson will discuss both options with you. Most online companies offer free standard shipping of their beds. Free standard shipping means curb side only delivery, and accordingly, the customer would have to take the bed into the house, place it in the room of choice, and do the assembly.

It is important to note here that the consumer needs to inspect the shipping container for any damage that could also indicate damage to the bed inside as well, and if any damage is found, not to sign for, or accept the delivery. Accepting the delivery without initial inspection, and then to later find that the bed was damaged, will result in having to wait for the retailer to send out a freight truck to pick up the defective bed, and then wait for the replacement one to arrive. Having found the damage when the bed was initially delivered and not accepting delivery, the consumer can make a call to the retailer and advise them of the refusal. The retailer will contact the freight company for verification, and then contact the manufacturer to send out an appropriate replacement usually in expedited fashion due to the inconvenience to the consumer. This will save up to two weeks of waiting for a replacement bed had the initial delivery not been inspected by the consumer.

Manufacturers of today’s adjustable beds have made the assembly process a relatively simple one. With the exception of the legs, and the mattress retainer bar at foot of the bed, the adjustable beds come fully assembled. The consumer would simply slide the bed out of the shipping container and attach the legs and the retainer bar. Most all accompanying owner’s manuals outline the smaller finishing details to facilitate successful completion of the assembly process.

For consumers needing the second option of having the bed assembled for them, the White Glove service would include bringing the adjustable bed frame into the home and setting it up including the removal of shipping cartons. Arrangements can be made with the retailer to also include removal of an existing bed, or having it moved to another location within the home. Also important to note is that most White Glove services as arranged by the manufacturer cover the setup of the adjustable bed frame, and not the placement of the mattress. This restriction does vary between retailers, and the consumer would have to discuss this with each one as necessary. White Glove services can run up to $399.00 depending on the retailer.
