ABOUT ZERO GRAVITY
ZERO GRAVITY DEFINED:
The condition of apparent weightlessness occurring when the centrifugal force on a body exactly counterbalances the gravitational attraction on it.
THE ULTIMATE POSITION FOR RELAXATION:
Maintaining good posture, even when watching TV or reading a book is not only good for your spine, it's now made easier with our new Exclusive Zero Gravity Equipped Adjustable Bed from Astrabeds.com
ORIGIN:
NASA developed the idea of using a zero gravity position from the experiences of astronauts who spent many hours while in orbit. During take-off, astronauts recline with their feet raised higher than their hearts. This zero gravity position reduces the amount of gravitational force exerted by the extreme acceleration it takes to achieve orbit. When you are in an upright standing or sitting position, gravity places pressure on your spine causing discs to compress and the back muscles to tighten to maintain balance. When you are suffering from back pain, this can be extremely uncomfortable. By neutralizing the effects of gravity, your back muscles can rest and your discs can return to their usual normal size and shape. Because of the effects of gravity, this explains why you are taller in the morning than you are at the end of your day. Overnight while sleeping, your back's spinal discs are relieved of the pressures of gravity and the weight of your body.
BENEFITS:
When you recline in a true Zero Gravity Position, with your legs elevated above your heart and an open angle created between your torso and thighs, a number of good things begin to happen.
THE POSITION:
Also sometimes called "90/90" because of the approximate right angles that occur at the hips and knees - immediately puts your back in the correct resting or "neutral" position. Since all our body parts are co-dependent, this Zero Gravity modification begins to have beneficial effects in other areas:
Correct Spinal Alignment -The proper neutral position for the 5-curve of your spine is maintained along the three regions of your back: cervical (neck), thoracic (upper back), and lumbar (lower back).
Back Pressure Relief -The lumbar region (lower back), especially, is relieved of almost all pressure. Disc compression is greatly reduced or eliminated completely.
Expanded Lung Capacity -Via the open angle created between the torso and thighs. Breathing is improved, thereby increasing oxygen levels in the blood.
Improved Circulation -With the legs elevated above the heart, stress on the heart is minimized, and the oxygen-rich blood being pumped to fatigued muscles helps them to recover faster.
Overall Stress Relief -The Zero Gravity position approximates the weightless conditions of outer space, in which the body experiences an absolute minimum of internal and external stresses.
Unloading of spinal discs - Human spinal discs have visco-elastic properties. That is, they compress at a decelerating rate when loaded and expand at a decelerating rate when unloaded. Higher loads result in a higher rate of compression. Spinal loading from daily activities will cause shrinkage in stature, of up to 20mm over the day. This transfer of fluid in and out of the disc is the body's mechanism for supplying nutrition to the discs. Spinal discs do not have a direct blood supply, and this osmosis and diffusion is essential to maintaining spinal health. It is unknown how often the spine needs to be "unloaded" during a day to maintain good disc health. Of course, disc fluid transfer is also increased with movement (that is, exercise!). Given that the onset of degenerative spinal changes occurs is commonly at a young age in industrialized societies such as our own, and that these degenerative spinal changes occur only at more advanced ages in primitive societies, it is likely that we need much more unloading and/or exercise in our daily lives than we currently get. Loads on the lumbar spine are reduced in neutral lumbar postures. Technically speaking, the neutral posture is defined as being near the mid-point of the available range-of-motion in that body region.
Relaxation of spinal muscles - The heart pumps blood, full of nutrients and oxygen, to our body parts. Muscles "pump" blood, carrying the waste products of metabolism, back to the heart. The muscle pump works by massaging the blood vessels which pass through them. The pumping massage action occurs as the muscles intermittently contract and relax. During sustained muscle contractions, blood flow through the muscles is restricted or occluded. So it is important that the muscles have intermittent opportunities to relax.
Recommended by many physicians and health care professionals, and it is the closest thing you'll find here on earth to the weightless conditions of outer space.
